These CD´s represent world-class cello artistry. It is playing that satisfies in every respect. Bengtsson, once a pupil of Gregor Piatigorsky and later his assistent at the Curtis Institute of Music, is at the height of his powers, and performs very much in the style and spirit of his famed Master. However, he is by no means an imitator. Irrespective of what he plays there is a sence of elegance, impeccable technique, silvery tonal timbre, a full range of expressive subtleties, and imaginative phrasing - all conceived in the spirit of the composer. Bengtsson´s Dvorak and Schumann concertos are noble in concept, intensely romantic, eloquently stated, and pristine in clarity. The Haydn and Boccherini concertos are purely etched and models of classical musicality. Reger´s Suites, strongly wrought in the mood and tradition of Bach, display Bengtsson´s mastery in solo performance. Henry Roth, The Strad |
